You’ll have to stop and think about how much money you have to spend on atv tires. Don’t go cheap! The biggest mistake many ATV owners make is buying any set of tires they can find because they’re cheap.

The first thing you should do is sit down and give some serioius thought about how you use your ATV. There are tires designed to do one thing really well – like riding in sand, then there are tires that try and be all things to all riders – which means they won’t excel at one thing very good – like mud bogging. Just because your ATV came with a certain set of tires doesn’t make them perfect for all types of riding.

ATV sand tires are tires with paddles on them. Loose sand is not a problem for these wide slick paddled tires. The paddles scoop the sand as the wheel turns, giving excellent traction. These tires are wider than normal and offer good traction in all types of sand terrain, whether it’s the beach or in the middle of the desert. The all smooth ATV sand tires are designed for the front steering wheels of a two wheel drive ATV.

When looking to buy a used machine, such as a used Can Am ATV, it will more than likely come with a general use tire. General use ATV tires are geared more for the casual rider or those that ride over fairly hard soil types.

Mud tires have aggressive treads to displace lots of mud and to keep the tire clean as it goes round and round. This allows the tire to dig deep and grab firm ground for traction. These tires should be your first pick if you find yourself and your machine covered with mud each time you go out riding. Some owners think mud tires will work good in sand do their diggin action. They’re wrong. You’ll dig youself a nice deep hole quickly if not careful when using a mud terrain tire in sand.

Now we get to the Sport and High Performance ATV Tires. These tires are meant for fast riding on hard surfaces. These differ from other types of ATV tires because of their lower profile. Some will have taller and wider wheels. The tread is also a bit more different, having many smaller treads in an X shape.

Stopping to think about where it is that you’ll be using your ATV is a critical step in choosing the right set of rubber for your four wheeler. So before you run out and plunk your money down for any old set of tires, give it a little thought and get the right ones for the job.
