Mountain bike cycling is the most exciting and accessible kind of cycling available. It is superb for fitness and it takes you away from traffic and all the usual daily stresses of life.
Mountain biking is generally done off-road, which can be anywhere from country parks to bridleways to allocated cyle trails and more difficult technical trails. If you are new to mountain biking be sure to practice enough to improve before trying any technical trails.
Most mountain bike riders learn their skills through practice over time and sometimes watching more experienced riders. It’s also a help to read books and watch DVDs on the subject, but the best way is just practice and more practice.
Obviously before you can begin you need to get a bike, so choosing one iss your first job. There are lots of different styles of mountain bikes available, that all vary in price and design. If you are just starting it’s a good idea to go for a less expensive model until you gain experience and decide where you like riding the most.
When you’ve got your mountain bike you’ll have to get some suitable clothing to wear. Mountain bikers tend to go for a more casual look than road cyclists, for example they often wear baggy shorts. Specialist mountain biking shorts look like regular shorts but with a padded lining for extra comfort.
Above everything, there are several bits of important kit to wear at all times, whatever the weather, and these are a helmet, glasses, and gloves. This safety equipment is to help protect you from flying mud and grit, low hanging branches and bushes, and falls.
You will probably have some minor falls as that is part and parcel of mountain biking, but if you are wearing the correct protective clothing you will only get minor cuts and bruises.
When you have all the relevant kit you will need to decide where to go mountain bike cycling. There are guides to your local area available, either from bookshops, bike shops or on the internet. Visitor information centres also have loads of useful information, such as local trails and their ability levels. There are even special mountain bike centres around the country run by the Forestry Commission that have trails marked for different abilities.
Once you’ve got all the right kit and information you’ll be ready to go mountain bike cycling, but it would be a big advantage to have a little mountain bike maintenance knowledge as well to help you to stay safe and push the boundaries. Above everything else, the most important factor is to enjoy the adrenalin rush you get.
