With so many choices of tow behind ATV trailers on the market, making a decision on which one to buy can be a tough decision. This article will break down the different types of ATV trailers to help you decide the right one for your needs. Many people use the terms trailer, wagon and cart interchangeably, but these 3 terms describe 3 different units.
A trailer has a non-steerable front end and may describe a unit with one to several axles. These units are designed to trail behind of the tow vehicle. The advantage of the trailer is the tongue is fixed in position which makes backing much easier. The trailer depends on the tow vehicles brake system in most cases and the rigid front end keeps the unit straight during braking.
A single axle cart is designed and linked with a tow vehicle to move as a wheelbarrow when ever needed. The cart don’t have its own braking system, basically it depends on tow vehicle braking system in most cases. Hard/strong front end enable cart to remain straighten during braking.
As compared to a cart, a wagon has a steerable front end that enable the wagon to turn directly behind of the tow vehicle. It’s important to keep in mind that makes backing a wagon is quite difficult. A wagon can be turned when needed to the side during going downhill on steep grades.
It’s common perception that ATV trailers are same like as a lawn trailer except its huge size and cheap atv tires. People who purchased ATV trailers of limited feature faced problem a lot latter on. A professional can work with a solid and heavy duty trailer for their purposes.
To allow a quality ATV trailer run at high speed, it should have roller bearing. In some cases a common problem arises i.e. axle failure in rough terrain. Therefore the axle of ATV trailer should be mounted so that the frame can flex with the axle mount to prevent it from failure in rough terrain. This feature can also be obtained by low pressure within the larger ATV tires to absorb the shock.
In high quality ATV trailers wood, steel and poly. Wood being used as cargo beds to have advantage of being easily replaced in case of damage. Each material has its own benefits like for steel, its easy to paint/ powder – coated and the lower the gauge number. Poly cargo beds have been used in past few years because it has ability to survive in swear weather condition and prevent it from cracking and breaking.
Poly has advantage over wood and steel, in that it never rusted or rotted as wood and steel does. While using aluminum for this purpose its important to keep in mind that there is draw back of white-corrosion issues with bare aluminum exposed to the weather due to dissimilarity due to metal corrosion.
