One of the most important parts of your camping or backpack equipment is, of course, your tent. It is not so easy to choose a tent as you might have thought! It is a good idea to do some research about the various types of tent before you buy one and to consider which seasons and weather conditions it will be used for. You won’t want to use an all season tent for mountain trips in the winter!
Things to Think About Before You Purchase a Tent
The Season
Three classifications are used for tents denoting the season that the tent is appropriate for.
Three Season – appropriate to use in most seasons of the year except when it is very cold.
Four Season – Suitable for all conditions including extreme cold
All Season – typically family tents appropriate for camping in the summer.
Weight & Size
You obviously need a tent that is adequate for the number of persons who will be using it. You may be tempted to go for a larger size but you need to also consider the weight if you will be hiking. Check out the weight of the tent before you buy it so that you do not have difficulty moving it around.
Keeping out the Rain
Nowadays most tents are treated with a waterproof coating that also allows good ventilation. In most tents you can attach a fly to the poles to prevent water coming in but allowing ventilation. Make sure you buy a tent with a sewn in floor.
Erecting the Tent
You won’t want to buy a tent that is difficult to erect. Dome tents and A frame tents are probably the easiest to erect. When you strike camp they are easy to pack up. Cabin tents tend to be harder.
Ventilation
Good ventilation is essential and you should look for a tent that has openings on all the sides. Mesh screens on every side are also a good idea and are present in most tents. Moths and bugs will be kept out by the mesh which would also allow good airflow inside the tent.
Conclusion
It is not difficult to buy suitable backpack equipment or cheap camping gear as long as you find out first it’s suitability for the season and conditions in which you will be using it.
